Transmissions are full of gaskets and seals since they rely on hydraulic pressure and fluid to operate. However, there are main seals that insulate the input and output shafts from the outside world, that are more prone to failure than the rest, and easy to diagnose. If you’ve noticed leaking transmission fluid from under your automatic car, truck, or SUV, Matt's Transmission in Murfreesboro has the answers you need.
On rear-wheel-drive cars, there are two main seals - one at the front, and one at the rear. Both are easy to diagnose; a leaking main seal at the front of the transmission isn’t visible, but the fluid will leak into the bell housing, and you’ll notice fluid dripping from between the engine and transmission. If the rear seal has failed, fluid will drip from the point where the driveshaft and transmission connect, at the back of the transmission.
On front-wheel-drive cars, the principle is the same, but the setup is a little different. There’s the main seal where the transmission connects to the engine, and if it fails fluid will leak from between the engine and transmission. Instead of one rear seal for the driveshaft, there are two seals for the CV axles, which connect to the front wheels. Sometimes a bad seal here can be difficult to diagnose since the main and CV seals are very close to one another. Nonetheless, if there’s leaking fluid, it’s time to have it inspected.
